Figures cover the Akron, OH Metro Area (OH).

In BEA’s 2024 figures, manufacturing is the Akron metro’s largest private sector, health care and social assistance ranks second and finance and insurance third. The City of Akron’s 2024 financial report, counting employees inside city limits at year-end, puts a regional health system first, followed by a children’s hospital, an e-commerce fulfillment operation and the city’s public research university, with a clinic-affiliated general hospital fifth. Summit County’s 2025 Annual Information Statement says a global tire maker keeps its global and North American headquarters in Akron and that an electric utility holding company is based there. It also lists a jewelry retailer and a hand-hygiene products maker among companies headquartered in the county and puts a specialty transportation insurer’s headquarters in Richfield.

Polymers set Akron apart. The Greater Akron Chamber counts 150-plus polymer companies in Akron and 500-plus in Northeast Ohio, and the U.S. EDA designated Greater Akron a Tech Hub for sustainable polymers, which the county statement says won a $51 million Phase 2 award in February 2024. The same document records a $31.25 million Ohio Innovation Hubs award, about $25 million of it for a shared Polymer Pilot Plant, and notes a second multinational tire company’s technical center in Akron. Summit County describes health care and biomedicine, logistics and distribution, and technology, financial and professional services as fields behind its diversity, while Team NEO’s 14-county list adds IT and headquarters operations. Bounce Innovation Hub runs software, health care and materials programs for founders.

Industries

Where Salesforce fits in Akron’s economy.

Largest private sectors, 2024 GDP share.

Manufacturing

12.2% of metro GDP

A tire maker’s global headquarters, a competing tire company’s technical center and the chamber’s count of polymer firms give Akron a manufacturing base rooted in rubber, plastics and materials science. Materials producers selling to OEMs need specification-driven quotes, sample and trial tracking, and ERP order visibility for account teams.

Health care and social assistance

9.7% of metro GDP

Hospital employers, from a regional health system to a pediatric specialty center and a clinic-affiliated medical center, fill three of the top six places on the city’s 2024 employer table, and the chamber builds patient care training pathways. Health systems here depend on referral management, physician relations and family or donor outreach with protected data locked down.

Finance and insurance

9.1% of metro GDP

A specialty transportation insurer keeps its headquarters in Richfield, a large regional bank appears among Summit County employers in the county’s 2025 statement, and Team NEO targets financial services across its region. Carriers and banks need agent or banker views of each client and service consoles with audit-ready permissions.

Wholesale trade

7.5% of metro GDP

Wholesale trade rounds out the metro’s five largest private sectors, and Summit County names logistics and distribution among the fields driving its economy. Distribution businesses tend to need reorder reminders, contract pricing by account and a shared view of open orders for inside and outside sales.

Regional target sectors: Polymers & advanced materials (Polymer Industry Cluster; Sustainable Polymers Tech Hub), Advanced Manufacturing, Construction Technology, Patient Care (healthcare), Health care & biomedicine, Logistics & distribution, Technology, financial & professional services, Information Technology, Financial Services, Headquarters & Professional Services, Healthcare & Biotechnology (Greater Akron Chamber - Economic Development / Akron, USA)

Common Challenges

Common Salesforce challenges in these industries.

Qualification cycles longer than sales cycles

Materials and polymer companies often run customer trials and qualification testing for months before an order, and tracking samples, lab results and decision makers over that span strains a standard pipeline.

Several health systems, overlapping referrers

With multiple hospital networks in one county, physician liaisons and outreach teams need clean referral source data, or duplicate provider records distort every report.

Headquarters serving many regions

Companies that run national or global headquarters from Summit County often have divisional sales teams on separate CRMs, and bringing them into one org means reconciling account hierarchies, territories and currencies.

FAQ

Salesforce consulting in Akron: questions.

We are a polymer compounder near Akron taking part in projects tied to the Sustainable Polymers Tech Hub. How can Salesforce track sample requests and customer qualification?

Create a custom object for sample requests linked to the opportunity, capturing grade, quantity, ship date and test outcome, so sales and technical service share one record. Opportunity stages can mirror your qualification gates, such as lab trial, line trial and approval, which makes forecasts more honest. Service Cloud handles technical questions after launch. If lab data sits in a LIMS, bring over summary results rather than raw data, and let Revenue Cloud price approved grades by volume tier.

Akron’s hospital systems, including a large children’s hospital, rank among the city’s biggest employers. How should a medical supplier or home health agency organize its referral sources in Salesforce?

Set up each hospital, practice and discharge planning team as an account with contacts by role, and log referrals as their own records so volume and conversion can be reported by source. Health Cloud offers referral and care program objects if you coordinate patient services, and Account Engagement can run physician education campaigns. Keep clinical documentation in the EHR and copy only the status fields staff need. Territory rules let liaisons split coverage between Summit and Portage counties.

Team NEO lists headquarters and professional services as a Northeast Ohio strength. What should a Summit County headquarters weigh when consolidating divisions onto one Salesforce org?

Begin with an account hierarchy and shared data standards so every division uses the same customer identifiers, then decide which processes truly differ and deserve separate record types. Enterprise territory management and sharing rules keep divisional teams on their own pipeline while leadership sees the whole. Consolidation almost always exposes duplicate customers, so schedule cleanup before migration. A health check of each existing org shows what is worth keeping and what should be retired.
